Entertwine at Kunstbanken, Hamar
Exhibition Entertwine opened on 3 of September at Kunstbaken in Hamar. Exhibition will go on untill 23 of October.
KRISTINA DAUKINTYTĖ AAS and KARINA NØKLEBY PRESTTUN have a close professional relationship since they met at the Department of Fine Art at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design (KHiB). Kristina graduated with a master’s degree in 2011 and Karina graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2009.
The common ground between these two artists is their interest in textiles. The materials serve as the foundation for an idea, which in turn take new directions and flourish into its own individuality and distinctiveness in the process. Both artists employ digital instruments frequently: Kristina through her work with digital jacquard-weaves, characterised by complex woven-in designs, and Karina through her computerized laser-cutter, but nonetheless in close dialogue with the textiles themselves.
When Kristina sends ten meters of disused wool warp from Innvik to Bergen, Karina invites dancers to explore the thread material. She sends video and pictures back. The rows of zeros and ones received by Kristina at the weaver’s will are translated into empty and filled squares, combinations of patterns woven in an alternate direction. The threads are rewoven. They show a glimpse of a thought, a face, loose threads.
The collaborative effort has emerged from a mutual fascination and respect for each other’s discoveries and explorations, and the curiosity of what happens if they are molded together. How can the expression be altered? Can we discover something new?
